Fruits Good For Skin & Good For You!
You’ve asked how you can easily fit in eating more fruits good for skin care and which will strengthen cell membranes, so here are some delicious ideas you can pick and mix from, then adapt to taste, but they all focus on fitting in more fruit.
Basically we are looking to have fruit which is high in anti-oxidants and also vitamin C, happily for a lot of us strawberries are the biggest provider of both – though not the biggest provider of anti-oxidants which tend to be present in higher concentration with darker fruits and berries.
Eating more fruits good for skin is crucial, but we mustn’t leave out other essentials like low fat dairy products which are our main source of vitamin A.
Anyone with thyroid disease (yep, me too, I’ve got Graves disease) should make double sure they get plenty of vitamin A from dairy food, because the main source of it is in carrots (beta carotene )which thyroid patients can’t convert to vitamin A or use properly, similarly the mineral Selenium is often missing or low in thyroid patients.
The recipe below is a guide to quantities and how you might combine fruit to help skin look more radiant using smoothies, iced pops – homemade of course, and iced fruit treats which are fairly new to me, but oh so easy to make.
Very Berry Blush – enough for 2
- 2 tablespoons blueberries
- 2 tablespoons raspberries
- 4 – 5 medium strawberries
- 1 medium banana
- 1 pot of low fat fruit or plain yoghurt
- 3 – 4 cubes of ice
- Optional – 1 teaspoon of Manuka honey
- Whizz in your blender or smoothie maker until liquidized, serve immediately
For an adult twist add a measure of Malibu – you still get all the benefits of the fruit and we all deserve a treat sometimes! Use any combination of blackcurrants, redcurrants, plumbs, raspberries and strawberries plus yoghurt for the vitamin A, and add favorites like passion fruit and mango to vary the flavour each day.
Iced Fruit Pops
I hope you’re seeing some fun possibilities here for getting kids into the fruit habit here!
Got Friends Coming To Dinner?
Make the fruit popsicals the night before, using iced champagne to top up the gaps left by the fruit. Get the champagne into the freezer for half an hour, you want it almost forming ice crystals which will have trapped the bubbles, before using to top up the molds. This way you get bubbly champagne iced pops as a starter or a refreshing low calorie (ish) dessert.
Frozen Fruits Made Into Iced Treats
